As previously mentioned, macarons are one of my few utter failures in the baking realm. One day, I will give the temperamental treats another try in my kitchen, but for now, I use my inability to make them myself as an excuse to indulge (to excess) when they are available.

So far, Sweet Lobby is the confectionery in D.C. dedicated to the macaron; however, New York is home to several, including the famed Laduree (which has French roots dating back to 1862!). During my last visit to New York, my friend was throwing a baby shower and had ordered boxes of macarons from La Maison du Macaron as shower favors. I happily tagged along for the favor pick-up.

The shower favors were adorable:

Faced with an entire pastry display case FULL of colorful macarons, it was difficult for me to pick just a few. . . so I left with a few boxes of my own:

I definitely intended to pick an even dozen, but then I saw the Nutella macaron and could not resist. All the fun flavors were delicious, but the traditional pistachio and almond macarons were still my favorite.

I hope the macaron craze catches fire in D.C. soon!
