Hula Girl Truck returned for Food Truck Friday in Franklin Park, and I decided to give the kalua pork plate lunch (with mac salad) and spam musubi a try. Both were delicious, but I think the sandwich still takes the top award for me. If you aren’t on board already, follow @hulagirltruck on Twitter (and @7potatomore)!

7 reasons to love food trucks

It’s food truck friday! There is some controversy about how to regulate food trucks in D.C. Here are 7 reasons to support their presence and growth in the District:
  1. Convenience. The food trucks come to you. To your office at lunch, to the movie festival in the evenings, to the street fairs on the weekends.
  2. Variety for your lunch routine. There are only so many times I can eat an unremarkable salad from Cosi.
  3. Support for entrepreneurs. Food truck operators are creative (how do you fit all that stuff in a truck?) and savvy (iPad credit card processing!) small business owners.
  4. Cheap eats. With the exception of the lobster roll from Red Hook Lobster, food truck menu items are $10 or less. (Note: the RHL lobster roll is worth every cent and a great value for lobster lovers!)
  5. The best [insert food item] in town. Not only are they a great value, but food trucks serve some of the best of their genre in town. Example: IMHO, aside from Rasika (where lunch entrees start at around $15-20) , Fojol Bros. serves the best Indian food in town (for $7-9).
  6. Melting pot on wheels.  Each with its own niche, food trucks have introduced foods from across the country and around the world to the D.C. lunch scene. Afterall, where would our country be without spam musubi, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, Korean-inspired tacos, duck fat fries, Cubanos, chicken florentine lasagna, empanadas, or Maine-fresh lobster rolls?
  7. Fun. Food trucks bring music, costumes, hula hoops, and a sense of humor wherever they travel. Orders are taken and delivered with smiles and gratitude. They even throw a monthly party at Navy Yard — Truckeroo!
